Frequently Asked Questions
CBCT is a medical imaging technique that is particularly used in dental imaging. It uses a cone-shaped x-ray beam that produces high-quality and accurate 3-D images of your teeth and jaws.
It is an extensively used test in accurate placement of dental implants; evaluation of the jaw, nerve canal, sinuses, and nasal cavity; determining tooth orientation and for reconstruction surgery.
It looks similar to a traditional panoramic machine. Patients can either stand or sit at a table. During the scan, the scanner rotates around the patient’s head in a complete 360-degree rotation and takes around 150-200 images to create a single 3D image.
A single CBCT scan usually takes around 12 - 28 seconds (depending on the area to be scanned). This means it is only used in cases where detailed imaging is required.
While a CBCT test exposes a patient to less radiation than a CT, the radiation is more than a traditional dental X-ray.
As against a standard X-ray, the scan provides images in high-quality and greater detail. It provides images of both the soft tissues and bone. Due to faster scan time, everything gets scanned in a single rotation.
