CT Coronary Angiography

A CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed images of organs, bones and other tissues in cross section like slices. It provides more detail than a regular X-ray.

The entire procedure usually takes between 0 to 60 minutes, depending on what part of the body is being scanned.

After the scan is finished, a radioligist will study your images and dictate the findings. Your physician will then review the report and discuss it with you.

CT scan is a safe imaging test. However, it exposes you to a small dose of radiation. For most people, such a small potential risk far outweighs the benefits, in terms of saving your life.

Image quality and suitability depend on heart rate/rhythm and clinical factors. Our team will guide you.

CTA helps evaluate:

• Coronary artery narrowing (stenosis)
• Plaque build-up (calcified and non-calcified)
• Possible causes of chest pain or unexplained breathlessness
• Coronary anatomy (as needed before certain procedures, as advised by your doctor)

Your doctor may suggest CTA if you have:

• Chest pain (new, unexplained, or atypical)
• Shortness of breath on exertion
• Abnormal/unclear stress test
• Risk factors such as diabetes, high BP, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, or family history of heart disease

CTA may not be suitable for some patients with significant kidney disease, iodine/contrast allergy, pregnancy, or certain heart rhythm issues. We’ll screen you before the scan.

Preparation can vary by protocol. Common instructions:

12–24 hours before (if advised)

• Avoid caffeine: coffee/tea/cola/energy drinks/chocolate (it can increase heart rate)

3–4 hours before

• You may be asked to fast (no heavy meals)

Please inform us if you have:

• Any prior contrast allergy
• Kidney problems (or if you’re on dialysis)
• Asthma, thyroid disease, or if you take metformin
• Any chance of pregnancy

Reports/records to bring (helpful)

• Doctor’s note/prescription (if available)
• Recent serum creatinine / eGFR (if available)
• List of current medicines

Heart rate control (for best images)

Some patients may be given:

• A beta-blocker (to slow the heart rate), and/or
• Nitroglycerin spray/tablet (to widen coronary arteries) Only if appropriate and safe for you.

1. Registration & safety screening (history, consent, kidney function review if needed)
2. IV line is placed in your arm for contrast injection
3. ECG stickers are placed on your chest to sync imaging with your heartbeat
4. You lie on the CT table; we guide you through short breath-holds
5. Contrast injection: you may feel a warm flush (common)
6. The scan itself takes seconds; total visit may be 30–60 minutes depending on preparation

After the scan, you can usually resume normal activities. You may be advised to drink extra fluids.

CTA is widely performed and generally safe when done for the right indication.

Contrast dye

• Most patients tolerate it well
• Allergic reactions are uncommon, but possible
• Patients with reduced kidney function may need precautions or alternatives

Radiation

• CTA uses X‑rays
• With modern scanners and optimized protocols, we aim for the lowest reasonable dose while maintaining diagnostic image quality
