A Color Doppler is a non-invasive ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) technique that helps doctors to evaluate the blood flowing through arteries and veins in various parts of the body such as the neck, legs, arms, brain or within various body organs such as the liver or kidneys.
The technique uses a computer to change the doppler sounds into different colors. These colors show the speed and direction of blood flow through the vessel.
A color doppler test is recommended to check for conditions such as blood clots, narrowing of arteries, blood flow problems within the kidney and pancreas, and heart valve defects.
In general, it takes about 10-30 minutes.
You may be asked to wear loose-fitting clothes. For a Doppler ultrasound on your belly, you may be asked to fast for 6 to 12 hours before the test.
This is a very safe and painless test. It does not use radiation.
